Motion REEL—Spec Project

Timeline: 6 Weeks
My Roles: Art Direction, Layout, Typography
Tools: Illustrator, Photoshop, After Effects, Premiere Pro

Project Overview

This self-initiated spec project explores how motion design can reimagine the energy and storytelling of modern sports marketing. Inspired by Nike’s visual language and basketball culture, the goal was to create a concept reel that blends brand precision with personal style—merging the grit of the game with the elegance of design.

creative direction

The challenge was to reinterpret Nike’s aesthetic through an experimental lens, using motion and typography to express rhythm, intensity, and emotion. Each piece was designed to feel both familiar and fresh—rooted in Nike’s identity yet elevated through a designer’s perspective shaped by years of experience in basketball and visual design.

process and approach

I began by deconstructing the key visual systems behind Nike’s campaigns: kinetic typography, minimalist composition, and the strategic use of motion to evoke momentum.
From there, I developed a framework built around modular type grids, rhythm-driven cuts, and layered compositions that mimic the pace and precision of an athlete’s movement.
Every frame was refined in After Effects and Premiere Pro to capture a sense of fluid motion, controlled energy, and storytelling through design.

reflection

This project represents an ongoing exploration of how brand identity and culture can be expressed through motion. It challenged me to balance bold experimentation with timeless brand principles. In future iterations, I plan to incorporate sound design, athlete footage, and real-world brand applications to evolve this concept into a complete motion campaign.
